This stone circle has a brilliant story and it's found at Machrie Moor on Arran. It's known as Fingal's Cauldron Seat after the great Gaelic hero and legend says that he used the stones to support a huge cauldron for cooking his dinner. However, Fingal's enormous dog Bran wouldn't leave the warrior alone as he prepared his meal so he tied it up using a hole in one of the stones. A hole that's still there and still works perfectly. Don't worry, no Labradors were harmed in the making of this film!

Molly and I were lucky enough to be invited by Discover South Scotland to follow in the footsteps of Robert Burns, Scotland's National Poet, right from his Birthplace to his Burial. (AD) Day 1 started in Alloway at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum which holds incredible treasures such as his writing desk, family bible and his sock, which I found myself strangely drawn to. Something so basic transforms the legend back into a relatable man. Many people visit Alloway, but not nearly enough follow Bur

Spring has definitely sprung now in Scotland! I had the pleasure of guiding a tour on a hike along Glen Lyon - the longest, the loneliest and the loveliest Glen in Scotland. After a long drive down most of the way, stopping at @glenlyontearoomandpostoffice of course, you come to a dead end at Lubreoch Dam. From here, it was a 10km hike in beautiful weather to a special wee place I'll share very soon! Unfortunately, it's also a 10km hike back to the car... There's so much history and beauty in Gl

Here's a short story corner from the 18th Century. A transport ship was heading to the new world and the crowd were catching their last glimpse of Scotland when they saw movement in the water. A huge whale burst from the waves. With its mouth wide open, this giant kept bumping the ship, refusing to leave. Trying to sate its appetite, the passengers threw in dozens of apples from the store but that didn't work. Somebody even threw in a stool but that was swallowed without change. There was only o

Is this Scotland's best bench view? Stiff competition, but this spot looking across the gorge to Castle Campbell has to be a top contender! You'll find it on the walk/drive down the road from the castle, perched above Dollar Glen in Clackmannanshire. That's a perfect place for a wander on a sunny Sunday and I hope you've all got something nice planned. Molly and I are going to head off to see if we can find any other benches to top this one... | Scotland's Stories

Sometimes, you just need to stop, take a big breath and listen to nature. Here's a short clip of birdsong from the Brig o Balgownie in Aberdeen to bring a bit of calm to your hectic Monday morning. If you want to know the bridge's history, then I posted that a week or so ago, along with the story of the curse uttered by Thomas the Rhymer that's thankfully yet to come true! | Scotland's Stories | Scotland's Stories · Original audio

Beautiful, purple heather is well and truly blooming around Scotland right now, which gives me the perfect excuse to tell you about an old Scottish legend. It surrounds a secret held by just one tribe in Galloway long before Scotland was Scotland. They had the recipe for Heather Ale. This wasn't just some regular home brew, Heather Ale was the sweetest, most delicious drink known to man. Anybody who tasted it would never be able to appreciate another pint the same way again. Secrets like this br

It's World Storytelling Day today and it shouldn't surprise any of you that I've got a story to tell... This is one that I told to the skipper on my recent boat trip, so I thought it would be a good idea to share it with you again here. A very anxious ship's captain approached a wee, old woman in Orkney one day because he'd heard she had a gift. Some people might call her a witch, but what she did was harmless (as long as you followed her advice). She sold favours of wind and after parting with

At the Globe Inn in Dumfries, you can sit in the actual Robert Burns chair, but only if you recite some of his poetry or sing a song. They might have thrown me out if I sang, so here's the beginning of Tam o Shanter (although it's not perfect, I was put on the spot...) There's nowhere on Scotland quite like the Isle of Iona, known as the birthplace of Scottish Christianity. It's a special place with a peaceful feeling, beautiful beaches and crammed full of history St Columba established his church here in 563AD to spread Christianity to the Northern Picts. After his death, this holy island only grew in importance, with 60 Kings laid to rest in the Reilig Odhran including some famous names like Macbeth! It was a place of art, culture and learning, but unfortuna

Here's two of the most fascinating wee graves I've ever seen, right next to Little Dunkeld Church in Birnam. It depicts a Biblical scene of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden along with the serpent coiled around the fruit tree. The more intact grave on the left was erected for John Burry, a farmer who died in 1740 "around 60 years old" and the other is for John Campbell, who followed in 1762. Elsewhere on the gravestone, you can find the carved words "Memento Mori" which means "remember death."

It’s no surprise that a castle known as the “guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain” has picked up some stories over the last 800 years. Hermitage Castle was built so close to the border between Scotland and England that just its construction almost caused war. In the 13th Century, this was home to the de Soulis family and one particularly evil character indeed. Soulis had been schooled in the dark arts and enjoyed nothing more than death and destruction. He had gained himself a helper fo

This 500 year old building on Edinburgh's Royal Mile infamous as John Knox's House, however, that name is a wee bit misleading. It's true that the famous preacher may have died here, but he could only have lived here for a short time. The initials above the door tell us who it was really home to during Knox's life - James Mossman and Mariota Arres. Mossman was from a family of goldsmiths and his father designed the crown that you can see in Edinburgh Castle for James V. Mossman carried on that r

This amazing structure is Dun Carloway Broch on the Isle of Lewis. It's a 2000 year old Iron Age tower, but don't just skip this one if ancient history isn't your thing, there are more recent stories to be found here. Structurally, brochs are simply drystone towers (built without mortar), circular in shape with a staircase rising between inner and outer walls. They appear across Scotland roughly between the 1st Century BC and 1st Century AD. Several stories high, you find these ruins mostly in t
