It lies within Whiteshell Provincial Park in eastern Manitoba, about 100 km east of Winnipeg. The 2.44 km diameter 110 m deep West Hawk Impact Crater (the deepest lake in Manitoba) is enclosed and completely submerged within West Hawk Lake (Ogilvie 1984).
