As a rule in most of Georgia's Piedmont areas pines are the most predominant of the trees; and turkeys will be roosted in pines more than any other trees. North Georgia mountains where forest are a mixture of hardwood and conifers; turkeys roost in both types of trees.

Standing longleaf pine forests provide not only excellent wild turkey habitat, but they also host everything from deer, songbirds and squirrels to various reptiles and amphibians. Some longleaf habitats support up to 170 species.

So first off turkey populations in GA are down in most areas of the state and I’ve not been hunting long. But I have been able to get on turkey sign in paulding forest, pine log, Redlands, and the Oconee National forest. If you are able to hike plenty of hills and paulding forest, Oconee, and Redlands can be good.

Once encompassing nearly 90 million acres from southern Virginia to east Texas, longleaf pine forests support nearly 600 plant and animal species, including 29 threatened and endangered species. Due to industrial timber species conversion, only about 3% of the longleaf pine ecosystem remains.
