Sixteen species of pigs and hogs in eight genera make up the modern family Suidae. Suids originally occurred across Eurasia south of 48° N, on islands as far away as the Phillipines and Sulawesi, and throughout Africa.

The three living families within the Suiformes include Hippopotamidae (hippos), Tayassuidae (peccaries) and Suidae (pigs). There are only two genera, each containing one species, which are known as hippos. The first one is Hippopotamus amphibius, which was very common in most of Africa at the beginning of the 19th century.
