Sati or suttee is a Hindu practice in which a widow should sacrifice herself by sitting atop her deceased husband's funeral pyre. It has been linked to related Hindu practice in regions of the Indian subcontinent. Sati appears in some post-Vedic Hindu texts as an entirely voluntary and optional practice. [1]
