I have had the Icom IC-781 since December 2005, the radio holds it's own very well to most modern radios. There is almost no discernible TX/RX performance difference of my IC-781 and my IC-775DSP. This radio has an array of functions like a built in terminal, dual clocks, memory menus and multiple timers among others.

Icom developed this radio under a defence contract; soon thereafter, the ham community "discovered" its incredible performance - way ahead of the pack at the time - and its unique features such as the Spectrum Scope, Dual Watch and Twin PBT.

The IC-781 (and the IC-780 not sold in the USA) is without doubt the finest HF transceiver ever built. The only difference between the IC-781 and the IC-780 is that the IC-781 is tuned for a higher output (150 watts vs. 100 watts for the IC-780) and was sold in the US and Europe.

It is a fantastic radio, perhaps the best analog transceiver ever made. Operation of this rig is straightforward, except for the microphone. The 781 has much lower gain in its mike pre-amp circuit than does Kenwood or Yaesu rigs.

No or low TX power output on one or more bands. PA-IC meter reading is high on faulty bands. Probable Cause: Burned components on filter unit, usually toroids or relays. Cure: Replace faulty components and check the automatic tuner for a possible problem. Verify that the power output from the radio not more than 160 watts.
