Nov 21, 2001 · The adjustable timing lights are good for getting a "range" on the dynamic timing of your engine. I prefer putting a timing tape on the balancer and using a conventional rather than an adjustable timing light. I think the timing tape method is more accurate.

Oct 19, 2021 · Put a tape on it and use your regular timing light. Then see what your dial back reads. I have a Sun regular inductive TL , a Snapon MT1261A , and a Crapsman dial back. The Snapon is 1 degree off (short) per 1000 rpm and the crapsman is dead nuts accurate. Go figure.

May 14, 2003 · Hook up the timing light as said before, start her up , run it up to about 3000 rpm, if you get a light with the dial on it, set it at roughly 36, shine it on your timing marks turn distributor till it shows 0 on the timing mark, if you use a regular light with no dial on it, it's gonna read 36 on your timing marks at 3000 rpm, Good Luck my man !!

The green wire sounds like it is the dwell sensor wire, and should go to the negative (TACH) side of the coil, on an HEI, the TACH terminal on the cap.

Jan 15, 2005 · Point the timing light at the timing tab and move your distributor either forward or back so the light flashes when it is on zero. Whatever you have your timing light set at, be it 36 or 40 degrees, that is how much total advance you should now have. Hook your vacuum advance back up. You might want to readjust your idle mixture screws now.

Sep 13, 2020 · A MSD-technician in the MSD-Forum stated somewhere, that with Capacitive-Discharge systems, no dial-back timing light should be used, because - as Dave states - it cannot be guaranteed that it wont show a wrong value, due to the high currents in the wires, "confusing" the timing light.. With non Capacitive-Discharge Systems, thats another story..
