By this point, a pit had been dug for the foundation, near the tip of Bodega Head; since the abandonment of the site, the pit has partially filled with water and become a pond, informally called the "Hole in the Head."

Nov 8, 2024 · Today it sounds almost unimaginable: A 325,000-kilowatt nuclear plant looming upon majestic Bodega Head, within a quarter-mile of the restless San Andreas Fault. An emissions shaft belching steam. Heated water spewing into the ocean. Electrical cables draped from steel towers along Doran Beach.
Despite opposition from locals, fishermen and marine scientists, PG&E plowed ahead with an access road that destroyed valued tidelands and clam beds in Bodega Bay. The utility also began excavating a massive crater that critics labeled the “Hole in the Head.” Its opponents became known as the “Hole in the Head Gang.”
