Hexagonal tightly packed (hcp) refers to layers of packed spheres such that spheres overlay each other in alternating layers. A slip framework, which is a close-packed structure, is hexagonal near packed. For elemental metals, the hcp structure is very general, including beryllium.
The T+ and T- interstitial sites above and below a layer of close-packed spheres in HCP are too close to each other (distance = 0.25c) to tolerate the coulombic repulsion generated by filling with like-charged ions. Most perovskites contain distorted octahedra and are not cubic, at least at lower temperatures.
