If anyone has seen the ocean dub, you'll know they edit Yamcha's death to not show his deceased body laying on the ground. They thought it was too violent, so they just showed the explosion, the resulting smoke, and then nothing else.

By the time the saiyan arc was “new”, dead of characters had us all guessing because no one knew there were more dragon balls on the universe, before dead was irrelevant on the franchise.
