The first jack I ever owned had a minimum lift height of 4.5 inches. It sucked big time with lowered cars having to drive them onto wood planks to get the jack under the car.

To lift the rear the only place that looks feasible to lift the both sides while allowing space for jack stands to be placed is the diff, but obviously I don't want to damage it.

I wouldn't get under if the car was supported by tire-changing jacks, so I bought a couple of pairs of 'axle stands'. They were some fairly heavy-duty Michelin sets each rated for 3 1/2 tons.
