Residential development on the fringes of Hopeman, particularly along the main road linking Elgin and Burghead (Forsyth Street), also occurred in the years leading up to the First World War.

Buildings of interest include Hopeman Lodge (c.1840), built as a seaside pavilion for Young of Inverugie; a 19th Century ice-house for storing fish; Inverugie House, built in 1864 to a design by Alexander Reid; and the Church (1854), with a Tudor Gothic tower gifted in 1923 by Elgin distiller, Innes Cameron.

The most likely source for these rocks is the Permo-Triassic sandstones of the Elgin-Hopeman-Lossiemouth area. This sandstone has been used extensively as a building stone up to the present day, and this could be an early record of such use.
