My wife even remembers Engineer Bill. Bill Stulla and John Rovik (Sheriff John) were fixtures on daytime TV for kids. I also remember Skipper Frank, Tom Hatton's "Popeye" and Bozo the Clown being on KTLA Ch. 5 after school. As I recall, Engineer Bill was on KHJ Ch. 9 and Sheriff John was on KTTV Ch. 11.

The CNW eliminated the brakeman/switchman-helper before the UP took them over. Most of our locals and yards are conductor/foreman only. Bill wanted to move the other ATM position from SLO to Oxnard where there were crews going on duty. The other newly promoted Assistant at Surf was George Erickson, who had been a brakeman. Bill agreed that he would take a new clerical type for one vacancy, provided he could have a "strong" type for the othert spot.

The crew did not like this new caboose as well as the old wooden one as it tended to get too hot in summer. Brakeman Bill Graylock used to hose the inside floor down with a garden hose from the Windsor depot most mornings when the summer temps were expected to climb into the 80's and higher. The rear end crew hated it as it heated up too much becoming uncomfortably hot.. Brakeman Bill Greylock's first job on arriving in Windsor outbound from Fort Collins was to draw a bucket of water and dump it on the floor. He said it helped to keep it cool. When I was the Engineer on the Wyoming/ Colorado Railroad, I would get bored at usually being the only one in the cab, as usually the Mechanic/Brakeman Bill was either in back babysitting the old mechanicals and electricals, or stayed behind in Laramie to work on projects trying to keep the other old locomotives and cars in service.

Can anyone school me on brakeman's lanterns and their history. I'm curious from both a collector's perspective, and rail's perspective. I’m specifically asking about the battery operated lanterns and not the oil lamps, for now. I see there are about 3 or 4 major brands and the same designs seemed to have been used for many, many decades.

Well, the real reason was the brakes. Not hand brakes but retainers. All the pops were set up by the handbrake staff at the roof of the car. When the hoghead called for them, the brakeman would go car to car and set them. Yes, gons and tanks, etc were a problem but you could still make the move. When TOFC came out, that was it.
