Antonio Muñoz Molina was born in Úbeda in 1956. In his books, the small town of Mágina is clearly based on Úbeda. After a brief period in Madrid when he got caught up in an anti-Franco conspiracy, he studied art in Granada. After marrying – his wife is the writer Elvira Lindo – he took a job in local government. They have three children.
