If you hire the guide on the other side of river, they would have to ride in the vehicle with you uphill to the ruins or you would have to wait for them to walk up the hill and meet your group. That would mean you had to wait for them before going in and exploring on your own. The COVID restriction being the wait time (guide not in vehicle) and having someone outside your group in close contact (in vehicle). Time for exploring and risk not amount of exploring
We will be driving ourselves and I see on some posts this was done. Was is an easy drive...did you need to use a GPS? We will be driving from Belmopan. Very helpful to know you can get a tour guide at the Ruin.

Hi - we have a couple options for excursions from our cruise ship. If you could only do one, would you go to Chichen Itza or Xunantunich and why? I hear that you can no longer climb Chichen Itza. We were spoiled by seeing Machu Picchu last year. Thank you for your help!
