When I was there in July you could practice panning gold in a demonstration setup. The two granddaughters enjoyed this learning experience. A trough with water device was there with gold pans and sand that was provided from an area with known gold. James gave us a good demonstration and helped identify the gold and tell the difference from "fools gold" and gold. The girls and their dad worked together for about 45 minutes from 12 to 1 pm and found a number of gold flakes as well as very small garnets. A small plastic tube was provided by James to put them in and they kept them. Advice is to get there when it opens at noon to have time for instructions before the first tour at 1. Instructions and help is needed to be successful in panning and identifying the gold. It is true that Matchless was primarily a silver mine so the gold was only in the setup device and there is no stream to do actual gold panning.

Hmm, if your mother enjoys the history of "Baby Doe" and the Talbot family, she might be able to walk from the [unpaved] parking lot to the cabin where Baby Doe lived. It's all on one level. The rest of the tour is up and down the hillside and probably wouldn't be a good idea but the cabin itself might be doable for her and could be of interest.
