Yes, you can snorkel right from the beach (which is rocky and slippery). It is possible to see fish right away and there were a lot of children there. However, we prefer a sandy beach and there are several more to our liking on the Big Island.
Curious if the beach is within walking distance of the Sheraton Resort?

That really depends on how fit you are. It's only 2 miles away but some of it will be uphill and you may not want to carry your beach stuff that far. It's only a 5 min drive by car.
What would be the best way to get to the beach? We will be arriving aboard The Pride of America cruise ship.

It's about 5 miles walk, along the ocean, so probably too far to walk both ways, anyway. Good luck -- and I hope you enjoy Kona while you're here and will want to return for more days sometime.

That chain has many locations on all the islands. You could also stop by WalMart and buy a set. Enjoy the adventure!
