Excellent visitor centre and Museum for which you will need to spend at least 30 minutes. There is then an easy paved path up to the Escalante Pueblo ruins and a view of the of the reservoir and surr… RoverP的完整评论

Very informative. The museum had so much good information. It has lots of artifacts, mostly pots. And a great recreation of a pit house. We only had time to see the 2 pueblos that were right there. T… mchaplin79的完整评论

We stopped at the visitor center but did not explore the rest of the national monument. There is a 1-mile (round trip) hike to the reservoir and ruins. Lots of helpful informational sights on the hik… Davigeta的完整评论
We are just driving through, staying in Cortez for a night on our way. Can you drive to see ruins and contain the visit to about 2 hours? And if we get there past the "hours open" are the outdoor areas open until sunset? If so, where do you suggest we go to get the best of such a short time frame?

Hi, we are leaving Monument Valley after a 9 am -11:30 am tour. The plan is to stop in Bluff at Twin Rocks Cafe for lunch and head to the Canyons of the Ancients for the rest of the day. (Originally we were stopping in 4 corners via UT-162 E and then heading north. But now we are skipping it, to give us more time in the Canyons, especially since the museum closes at 5pm) Our hotel is in Cortez and we are seeing Mesa Verde in the morning. (Unfortunately, before the ruins are open for the season. This was a huge disappointment.) Regardless, I am confused and am looking for help. Does the entire area of the Canyons of the Ancients close at 5pm with the museum or at dusk. Sunset will be after 7pm. Do we have the extra 2 hours to explore the area? I appreciate any help in my planning. As I have it planned, we are leaving Bluff via US-191N to UT-262E to Hovenweep Rd and Reservation RD to Co Rd 10. I wanted to stop at Hovenweep, but I was trying to get to the museum by 4pm, to at least have an hour to explore. I know this is backwards and we should start at the visitor center. This would mean seeing Lowry and maybe Painted Hand, if time allowed. I was feeling rushed, until I realized that perhaps the park is open until dusk and only the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum closes at 5pm. I was planning on heading south to our hotel in Cortez when finished. I am planning an 8 day trip from Phoenix to Albuquerque, and this stop has me needing guidance. Thank you for any advice!! I appreciate it. I called the visitor center and left a message.

Your best bet is to call the Visitors Center again to be certain. I suspect the ruins do not close at 5pm, but at dusk, since they are all wide open and scattered about. The visitors center / museum is wonderful! We spent several hours exploring the ruins and made the visitors center our last stop, which worked out fine. We might have spent too long in there if we'd done that first (it is that good!). Do not - I repeat DO NOT depend on your GPS while exploring the ruins. Use one of the good printed/copied maps. GPS will take you down dirt roads that may end in a tough spot. And allow some time to drive between the various ruins sites since they are not compact. Mesa Verde is wonderful, so you'll want to return when everything is open. The drive to Farmington and then ABQ is also nice, if that's the route you're taking.
