I walked into 3 different malls last Sunday, and something felt... off. No Deepavali music. Barely any decorations. Just the usual playlists and displays. I turned to my friend and said, “This makes me feel a little sad.” Malaysia is rich in culture, with so many ethnicities and religions. No matter how small the minority, every celebration deserves to be recognized. I mean... it’s a reminder of who we are as Malaysians. Then we made our way to Gardens Mall. The difference hit me immediately. The decorations were stunning... vibrant colors and intricate designs everywhere. They even had a board that explains what each of the decor symbolizes. The speakers blasted lively Indian songs, filling the space with festive energy. It felt like the season was truly being celebrated... ... Welcoming everyone into the joy of Deepavali. As I stood there, snapping photos of the displays, a cheerful woman called out to us: “Come do henna—it’s free!” Without hesitation, my friend and I said yes. I’ve always loved henna. How to not resist la? Plus, we had time to spare before the Indian dance performance at 3 pm. When 3 pm came, people slowly gathered. A mix of curious shoppers, all pausing to watch. The dancers appeared, moving with such grace and joy. Their vibrant costumes sparkled under the lights as they twirled and stepped in perfect rhythm. For a moment, it felt like everyone in the mall was connected. Strangers standing side by side, smiling, moving to the beat unknowingly, and sharing a moment of unity. When the performance ended, I saw kids running towards the dancers and one of them even hug the dancer. Such a sweet moment. I didn’t walk out with shopping bags, but I left with something better. A sense of joy and connection. As much as malls lean into Halloween and Christmas for commercial reasons, I believe they should put the same heart and soul into all our festivals. These celebrations aren’t just events... ... They are part of what makes Malaysia, Malaysia. When we walk into a mall, it can be more than just another shopping trip. Why? Because they have the power to reconnect people to their roots, their traditions, and each other.
